Red Devil Fall Sports: Devils Football Win Opener, Lady Devils Soccer Both Win on the Road

Fall sports teams are heading into their third week of the season with some teams getting their first wins on the books. Let’s take a look at the Red Devils’ standings. 

RED DEVIL FOOTBALL VICTORIOUS IN SEASON OPENER
The Burlington Red Devils came away with a 27-14 win over Westborough on Sept. 13. Senior quarterback Anthony Gerrior led the way to a victory with an impressive 249 passing yards, two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown to junior wide receiver Ryan Brooks. Defensive back Matt Conte helped the team on defense by scoring a 45-yard pick-six. It’s an auspicious sign for the 2024 team, which dominated on the field in their first game of the season despite losing 11 seniors last year.

LADY DEVILS SOCCER EVEN OUT RECORD
The Lady Devils Soccer team is 2-2 this season after a 3-1 win over Watertown on Sept. 11. Kim Ochoa, Briana Thomas and Ellie Matarazzo all scored goals. Burlington will be the road this week in Melrose and Wakefield Memorial on the 17th and 19th, respectively.

RED DEVIL SOCCER GET FIRST VICTORY SINCE THE 2022 SEASON
2023 was a rough year for the boys soccer team, who went the whole season without a victory, and lost their first four games of 2024. But the losing streak ended with an 8-1 victory over Arlington Catholic on Sept. 13, with strong performances on both offense and defense by the Burlington team. The boys face off against Melrose on Sept. 17. 

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL BOUNCES BACK AGAINST ARLINGTON
After a shutout loss to Newton South Concord-Carlisle, Lady Devils Volleyball got back in the win column with a victory over Arlington, 3-0. Melrose, Wakefield Memorial and Wilmington are the next three games this week. The team is now 3-3 after another 0-3 loss in Melrose on Sept. 16. 

FIELD HOCKEY LOSES TO ARLINGTON
Girls Field Hockey lost 3-1 in the game against Arlington on Sept. 11. The team played Watertown on the 13th; where they were shutout 7-0. Burlington got their first win of the season against Melrose,2-1 on the 16 with goals by senior Olivia Floyd. Now at 1-4, the team will be on the road in Wilmington on the 20th. 

DEVILS GOLF ON A ROLL
Red Devil Golf stands at 4-3 this season after back-to-back wins over Shawsheen Valley Tech, 171-153, and Lexington, 41-31. This week the Devils have three meets against Belmont, Billerica Memorial and Winchester. 

WOBURN/BURLINGTON GIRLS SWIM FALL IN SEASON OPENER
Winchester defeated the joint Woburn/Burlington swim team 91-74, but a number of swimmers qualified for the North Sectionals and State Championships in November.  Here is the full list:

-50 Freestyle:  Kayleigh McCarthy (27.30)

-500 Freestyle:  Ryley McCarthy (6:01.12)

-400 Freestyle Relay:  Kayleigh McCarthy, Alex Mahon, Ava Eldridge, Ryley McCarthy (4:14.80)

Qualify for both Sectionals and States championships in November

-200 Medley Relay:  Ryley McCarthy, Grace Davison, Ava Eldridge, Sadie Floyd (2:07.77)

-100 Freestyle:  Kayleigh McCarthy (59.23)

-200 Freestyle Relay:  Kayleigh McCarthy, Alex Mahon, Grace Davison, Sadie Floyd (1:53:27)

Head coach Vito Costa said he is impressed with the talent on the team this he has this year and knows that it will only get better from here. 

“We had two freshmen Brenna Higden and Rachel Dawley who crushed it in multiple events,” He said. “That’s what we asked these girls to step up and some of these freshmen have talent, so I was really proud of what they did.” 

GIRLS/BOYS CROSS COUNTRY BOTH LOSE TO ARLINGTON IN OPENER
Both cross country teams are 0-1 after losing both of their openers.  The girls lost their meet 50-15 and the boys 46-17 (in cross country, the lowest scoring team wins.)

Here were the results of the girls:

9th place- Kayla Mackie- 23:10
13th place- Kritika Agarwala – 24:24
15th place- Samantha Burke- 26:04
29th place- Mahi Kansagra-30:27
30th place- Sofia Hiraldo- 34:16

Top three finishers for the boys meet were:

4th place- Krish Almeida-16:50
11th place- Roy Kanyike- 17:50
14th place- Henry Stefanowicz- 17:55

Wakefield Memorial will be the next meet on the docket on Sept. 17 at Varsity Field.
