Red Devil Fall Sports: Football Heading to Playoffs, Volleyball Advances to Sweet Sixteen Round

Burlington High School fall sports are winding down as the Red Devils finish up their regular season games this week and next. Let’s take a look at what’s gone down:

RED DEVIL FOOTBALL SHUTOUT WATERTOWN ON SENIOR NIGHT
The Red Devils finished their season at 7-1 and will compete in the D4 MIAA Playoffs after a shutout win against Watertown on Senior Night. Check out the details here.

GIRLS SOCCER TEAM SEASON CAME TO AN END
The Burlington girls soccer team closed out the 2024 season 6-10-2 after a 2-1 loss to Waltham on October 28. Kimberly Ochoa, Madison Casey, Ava Cicolini, Cassie Herrera, Lacey Lauder, Savanna Scali and Caitlyn Tremblay will be graduating this coming spring.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL ADVANCE TO SWEET SIXTEEN
After a 3-1 win in the round of 32 against Notre Dame of Hingham, the Lady Devils Volleyball are competing against Oliver Ames in the sweet sixteen round of the playoffs this week on November 6.

FIELD HOCKEY SEASON ENDS
The girls field hockey team season came to an end after a 6-0 loss to Nashoba Regional in the round of 32 of the playoffs. Eleven seniors are graduating this coming spring: Avery Curtis, Ashleigh DeMartinis, Audrey Londino, Audrey Otis, Olivia Floyd, Nora McDowell, Mackenzie Coughlin, Sarah Gemelli, Marissa Ulmschneider, Megan LoVuolo and Mason Alongi.

BURLINGTON/WOBURN SWIM COMPETE IN SECTIONALS
Grace Davison, Kayleigh McCarthy, Megan Sheehy, Tuyen Nguyen, Alexandra Mahon, Ryley McCarthy, Sadie Floyd, and Ava Eldridge from the Woburn and Burlington swim team competed in the sectionals meet over the weekend. The 200 Medley Relay team of Ryley McCarthy Eldridge, Sheehy and Mahon finished with a time of 2:04.72. Kayleigh McCarthy came in sixth place overall in the 200 freestyle at 2:05.38. In the 200, Ava Eldridge came in at 2:31.72. Mahon and Floyd placed sixth overall in the 50 freestyle. Floyd and Kayleigh McCarthy placed 4th and have a new record holder for Woburn High School for the 100 Freestyle.

Other milestones include:

500 Freestyle: Eldridge: 6:08.82, Ryley McCarthy 5:49.29

200 Free Relay: 147.52,
Alexandrea Mahon, Kayleigh McCarthy, Grace Davison, and Sadie Floyd eighth place overall and new Woburn High School record.

100 Backstroke: Ryley McCarthy 1:01.52, fourth place overall

400 Free Relay: 3:58.69, new Woburn High School record, eighth place overall

CROSS COUNTRY COMPETE AT MIDDLESEX LEAGUE MEET
Both the girls and boys cross country team competed in the Middlesex League Meet on October 28. Click here to watch the recap.

The boys team competed at the Frank Mooney Invitational over the weekend. Top finishers from the race include:

21st place: Alexis Alay Lopez- 12:58.89
86th place: Beckett Baldwin- 23:14.90
88th place: Arya Balsara-17:00.50

Next weekend, the team will be at Fort Devens for the MIAA Division 2 Cross Country Championship.

Robert Parris is BCAT’s Sports and Features Reporter. Robert first got involved with BCAT in January 2016 as a volunteer news reporter. Throughout the year, as a volunteer, he was busy developing his technical skills at the studio and his ENG skills in the field. In the summer of 2017, Robert joined the team full-time.
