Red Devil Fall Sports: Swimmers Qualify For States and Sectionals

Rivalries came to a head in Red Devil football as other teams rack up wins and losses. Let’s take a look at the Red Devils’ standings. 

RED DEVIL FOOTBALL DEFEATS WOBURN IN A GAME OF INCHES 

The Burlington Red Devils came away with a 21-15 win over Woburn Memorial on Sept. 20, ending a years-long losing streak against their longtime rivals. Click here for more details. 

The Devils will face the Cambridge and Latin Falcons on Friday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. 

SOCCER TEAMS GEAR UP FOR TOWN NIGHT
One of the biggest nights of the season for Burlington’s soccer teams is Town Night, when younger players show up to support the high school teams and school spirit is out in full force. Check out our article for Town Night here.

Leading up to the big day, the girls team stands at 2-4-1 this season after a 2-1 loss to Melrose on Sept. 17 (freshman Lexi Langone scored the lone goal) and 4-2 loss to Wakefield Memorial on Sept. 19. The girls tied against Wilmington 2-2 on Sept. 23, with goals by senior Caitlyn Tremblay and sophomore Mackenna Ryan.

Meanwhile the boys soccer team had a fantastic 8-1 win over Arlington Catholic on Sept. 13, then shut out Melrose in a rare 0-0 tie on Sept. 17. Their record for the season is 2-3-1 after a 1-0 win over Wilmington on Sept. 23. Goal in the game was scored by junior Noah Castro.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL MAINTAINS EVEN RECORD
After a 1-3 loss to Wakefield Memorial on Sept. 18, Lady Devils Volleyball got back in the win column with a victory over Wilmington, 3-0, on Sept. 20. Their record is 4-4 for the season.

Burlington has two games this week, a home game against Stoneham on Sept. 24 and an away match in Belmont on Sept. 26. 

FIELD HOCKEY TAKES WILMINGTON
Girls Field Hockey won 2-1 in the game against Wilmington on Sept. 20, and then a 3-1 win against Wakefield on Sept. 23 bringing their record to 3-4 this season. Goals in the Wakefield victory were scored by: junior Lucy Clement, senior Audrey Londino and sophomore Jamie Mulkerin. The team has two more games this week with a home game against Stoneham and another away game in Belmont. 

DEVILS GOLF PREPARES FOR MIDDLESEX SHOOTOUT
Red Devil Golf stands at 5-5  this season after a loss to Belmont, 44-28, a win over Billerica 37-35, and another loss to Winchester, 44.5 to 27.5. Burlington will face Stoneham and Melrose this week, and will also tee off at the Middlesex League Shootout on Sept. 26. Details next week. 

WOBURN/BURLINGTON GIRLS SWIM QUALIFIES MORE ATHLETES
Wakefield Memorial defeated the joint Woburn/Burlington swim team 90-80, but that didn’t stop seven athletes have qualified for North Sectional in November. Swimmers qualify for the sectional based on their time in the individual event.

Here is the full list:

Qualifying for Sectional Championship:
– 50 Freestyle: Sadie Floyd (27.58)
– 200 Freestyle: Kayleigh McCarthy (2:12.31)

Qualifiers for both Sectionals and State Championship:
– 100 Backstroke: Ryley McCarthy (1:07.89)
– 400 Free Relay: Kayleigh McCarthy, Ava Eldridge, Megan Sheehy, Ryley McCarthy (4:11.97)

 

The team is 0-2 this season and will be back home at the Woburn Boys & Girls Club against Reading on Sept. 25. 

GIRLS AND BOYS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HAVE YET TO SCORE FIRST WINS
Both cross country teams are 0-2 after losing to Wakefield Memorial on Sept. 17.  The girls lost their meet 47-17 and the boys lost 36-23. In cross country, the lowest scoring team wins.

Here were the results of the girls:

The boys’ results are as follows:

13th place- Ivan Ivanov- 18:03
14th place- Jaden Lamoretti- 18:31

Despite the losses, boys head coach Matt Carr commended the athletes on running well. “Roy Kanyike, a junior, ran great, Henry Stephanowicz, a sophomore, second meet in a row he ran great. For Roy, it was a nice recovery from last week, which was not so good.”

“I went out slow and I focused more on the end so I could have a better finish,” Kanyike said. “What I’m going to focus on for next week is making sure the middle of my race is a lot faster so I can have a more progressive end.”

“We have a young team, so we’re still growing, we’re still improving,” said girls head coach Danielle Covino. “It was a loss for us today, but looking at the girls and their times, this a win for almost all of our teams.”

Both teams will remain home against Wilmington on Sept. 24 at Varsity Field.

MSTCA FRANK KELLEY INVITATIONAL

Burlington track athletes took on the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Frank Kelly Invitational this weekend, with five athletes from the girls team and 24 athletes from the boys team competing. 


The Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association held the Frank Kelley Invitational over the weekend with Burlington athletes running the course. Here were the full girls’ results of the 3K trek:


Freshman 3K:
56th place- Sarah Disarcina- 15:13
88th place- Sofia Hiraldo- 17:27

Sophomore 3K:
94th place- Mahi Kansagra- 16:16

Junior 3K:
34th place: Kritika Agarwala-14:09
37th place: Sammy Burke- 14:12 

Here were the top finishers from each of the grade levels from the boys portion of the invitational: 

Freshman 3K:
94th place- William Cline- 13:21

Sophomore 3K:
16th place- Henry Stefanowicz- 10:39

Junior 3K:
8th place- Roy Kanyike- 10:16
