Red Devil Round Up: Track Teams Sweep Watertown, Tennis Teams Pick Up Wins

BOYS TRACK DEFEAT WATERTOWN IN BLOWOUT FASHION
The Burlington High School boys track and field team turned in a dominant performance, improving to 2 and 0 on the season with a victory  over the Watertown Red Raiders.

Burlington cruised to a 134 – 2 victory, sweeping multiple events and controlling the meet from start to finish. Junior Leon Sekandi had a standout day, winning the 110 meter hurdles, high jump, and triple jump, while also hitting a Division 4 qualifying mark in the high jump.

Senior Matt Conte took first in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.93, and added a second place finish in the 110 hurdles. Senior Steven Dalalelis led the sprint group with wins in both the 100 and 400 meters.

In the distance events, senior Evans Katayomba won the mile. Junior Logan Dagraca led a sweep in the two mile alongside senior James Roy and sophomore Henry Stefanowicz. Junior Arun Nagappan took first in the 800 meters, with senior Roy Kanyike finishing just behind him in second.

Burlington also picked up wins in both the 4 by 100 and 4 by 400 relays.

In the field events, senior Perkins Augustin won the shot put. Senior Ryan Brooks took first in the javelin with a Division 4 qualifying throw. Junior Jack Tucci added a win in the discus. Junior Shane Sheehan contributed across multiple events, including a first place finish in the long jump.

GIRLS TRACK REMAIN UNDEFEATED AFTER WIN OVER WATERTOWN
The girls indoor track team followed in the boys footsteps with a strong showing of their own, earning a 107-22 win over Watertown.

Senior Leila Gilligan led the way, winning both the 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles, while also placing second in the 100 hurdles. Sophomore Grace Conte took first in the two mile, with junior Ava Eldridge finishing second.

In the sprint events, senior Briana Thomas placed second in the 100 meters, followed by senior Kaya Cummings and sophomore Samantha Cicolini. Senior Lyla Kuhn finished third in the 200 meters, with senior Olivia DiRienzo and Lucy Clement also placing.

The girls also had a strong showing in the field events. Seniors Cassidy Hanlon and Avery Callahan took first and second place in shot put. Hanlon also took first in javelin, while Callahan took first in discus. 

DiRienzo placed second in the long jump and third in the triple jump, while Thomas also placed in the triple jump. Kuhn added a second place finish in the high jump.

With strong performances across the board, both teams continue to build momentum early in the season as they remain unbeaten. Burlington will look to keep that momentum going when they compete against the Wakefield Warriors next Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS GET IN THE WIN COLUMN AGAINST WAKEFIELD
The girls tennis team lost to the Reading Rockets 5-0 on Monday April 13.

They rebounded and picked up their first win of the season at Wakefield last Tuesday, 4-1. Therese Kosinski and Cecelia Fraczek won in singles, while Shreeya Patel & Emery Shaw, along with Samira Patel & Nishtha Prajapati, won their doubles matches.

They lost 4-1 on the road in Wilmington last Thursday, with Emery Shaw winning her singles match. Burlington will face the 0 and 7 Stoneham Spartans next Monday afternoon on the road.

BOYS TENNIS SHUTOUT WAKEFIELD IN FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
The boys tennis team had four games last week.

They lost 3-2 against the Reading Rockets last Monday at home, with singles players Ridhaan Ayyagari and Casey Shannon winning their matches.

They picked up their first win of the season the following day, 5-0 over the Wakefield Warriors at home. Singles players Ayyagari, Shannon, and Arnav Jhumat, along with doubles teams Matthues Torres & Austin Li, and Rahul Patel & Geo Pranav all won their matches.

Last Thursday, they defeated the Wilmington Wildcats 4-1 at home. Singles players Ayyagari and Shannon, along with doubles teams Nathan Melanson & Mattheus Torres, and Rahul Patel & Austin Li all came out victorious in their matches.

Ayyagari and Jhumat were the singles winners in the 3-2 loss to the Waltham Hawks on the road this past Friday. Burlington is now 2 and 6 and will return to action next Monday afternoon on the road against the 1 and 6 Stoneham Spartans.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL LOSE BACK-TO-BACK MATCHES
Burlington boys volleyball lost back-to-back 0-3 matches last week at home to the Arlington Spy Ponders last Tuesday, and the Lexington Minutemen last Thursday. They have a record of 5 and 4 and will return to action next Monday on the road against the 6 and 2 Woburn Tanners.

GIRLS LACROSSE LOSE CLOSE GAME TO MELROSE
Burlington girls lacrosse lost in a thrilling game of 18-17 on Monday, April 13 against the Melrose Red Hawks in our Game of the Week. At halftime, the Devils were behind 11-7. They bounced back in the second half, scoring four goals in the third, making the score 15-11. The Devils were able to score six goals in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 17 apiece. Unfortunately, Melrose scored with under 30 seconds left, taking the lead by one, 18-17, which gave them the win over Burlington.

They rebounded from the loss, and had back-to-back road wins. Last Wednesday, they defeated the Arlington Spy Ponders by a score of 10-3, then last Friday they won 11-7 over the Pentucket Regional Panthers. Tuesday morning they lost 8-4 to the Billerica Indians at home.

Burlington is now 4 and 4 and will be on the road for the remainder of the week: at the 5 and 3 Central Catholic Raiders on Wednesday and the 4 and 3 Bedford Buccaneers on Friday.

BOYS LACROSSE DEFEAT MELROSE BY ONE
Burlington boys lacrosse won a close 7-6 game on the road against the Melrose Red Hawks last Monday. Sophomores Jake Robitaille and Jack Tirabassi scored two goals each, while sophomores Cam Bonnell and Jake Griffin, along with junior Brandon Derosa, each had one.

They returned home last Wednesday, defeating the Arlington Spy Ponders 14-7, and won against the Nauset Regional Warriors 10-9 this past Saturday.

They are currently 5 and 3 after a 10-6 loss on the road to the Westford Academy Ghosts.

BOYS BASEBALL LOSE TIGHT MATCHES
The boys baseball team went 1 and 3 last week, losing to the Melrose Red Hawks on the road 10-2 last Tuesday.

Burlington returned home last Thursday for a date with the Arlington Spy Ponders, which went into extra innings after both teams were tied at three apiece. The Devils ended up losing that match 4-3.

This past Saturday, the team lost another heartbreaker, 8-7, on the road to the Bedford Buccaneers.

Burlington is now 2 and 4 and will have another three games during April break: on the road against the undefeated 4 and 0 Wakefield Warriors on Wednesday, at the Wilmington Wildcats on Friday, who are looking to win their first game of the season, and then they will return home the following day to face the undefeated 4 and 0 Cambridge Rindge and Latin Falcons.

GIRLS SOFTBALL DEFEAT MELROSE
Girls softball had two games last week with different results. They won at home against the Melrose Red Hawks last Tuesday afternoon with a 14-11 score.

Burlington was then on the road in Arlington last Thursday, losing by three, 10-7.

They will have three matchups at home this week and now hold a 2 and 4 record: the 4 and 1 Wakefield Warriors on Wednesday, the 4 and 2 Wilmington Wildcats on Friday, which will be our Game of the Week, and Saturday the 2 and 2 Woburn Tanners pay a visit.
