Our Burlington Red Devils continue their regular seasons as we close out the last week of January. Let’s break it down.
GIRLS BASKETBALL WIN CLOSE AGAINST WINCHESTER
The Girls Varsity Basketball team had a huge 44-38 victory upsetting 10 and 3 Winchester at home last Tuesday night.
They were on the road in Watertown on the 23rd, where the game came down to the wire. After the end of regulation the game was tied, sending it into overtime, where the girls came up short 37-35.
Burlington is now 5 and 7 and will have two matchups against 4 and 8 Reading on the road on Tuesday and then return home to host a 5 and 8 Melrose team on Friday.
BOYS BASKETBALL SECURE POSTSEASON SPOT
The Boys Varsity Basketball team is on a six game winning streak. They won 57-54 against the then undefeated Winchester High last Tuesday night on the road. Seniors Charlie Poehler (20 pts.) and Matt Gray (17 pts.) both had a stellar night, while junior Leon Sskandi had 10pts.
They continued the road trip with a 56-42 win at Watertown this past Friday. Gray and Poehler had another great performances in this matchup with 19 pts. and 14pts. respectively. This win secured the team a postseason playoff spot for the 10th straight year!
Burlington is now 9 and 2 and will have two games at home this week against 3 and 11 Reading on Tuesday and 8 and 5 Melrose on Friday.
We will be featuring both basketball teams in our Game of the Week this Friday with the boys at 5:30 and the girls at 7.

GIRLS HOCKEY MAKES COMEBACK AGAINST MASCO
The Girls Varsity Hockey team picked up their fourth win of the season 4-2, at home against Masconomet last Wednesday. Burlington was down 2-0 at the end of the second period, but things took a turn for the better when 7th grader Aubrey Costa scored her first career goal, junior Shayla Kocur had one and freshman Sofia Cleary finished it off with two goals of her own.

Burlington lost at home to Winchester this past Saturday 4-1 with Cleary getting the lone goal. They are now 4 and 8 and will host the 7, 2 and 2, Reading Rockets at home on Wednesday night.
BOYS HOCKEY CLINCHES POSTSEASON SPOT
The Boys Varsity Hockey team’s eight game winning streak came to an end in Woburn after a 2-1 overtime loss to the Tanners last Wednesday night. Freshman Matthew Ulmschneider scored the lone goal.
Burlington defeated Winchester in a blowout score of 4-1 this past Saturday. Junior Wyatt Condon had two goals, senior Giacomo Berardinelli and sophomore Nick Tulipano each had one. With the win the Devils secured a spot in the MIAA Postseason Tournament.
They are now 10 and 2 on the season and will host the 9, 2 and 1 Reading Rockets on Wednesday night.
WRESTLING COMPETE IN WOBURN, TRAVEL FOR QUAD MEET
Red Devil Wrestling had a busy and competitive stretch over the past week.
On Wednesday night, the Red Devils traveled to Woburn and lost 45–25. Burlington earned individual wins from Max Shvartsman (106 pounds), Davi Tonani (157), Cameron Bonnell (165), Josh Leavitt (215), and Mo Amanou (285).
The team then headed to Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston on Friday for a quad meet, where four teams competed against each other in a single evening. Burlington opened the night with a hard-fought 39–39 tie against Middleboro, followed by a 42–30 loss to host Silver Lake. The Red Devils finished strong, closing the event with an impressive 55–18 victory over Oliver Ames.
Max Shvartsman, Lukas Abreu, Connor McElroy, Cameron Bonnell, and Josh Leavitt each had a perfect evening, winning all three of their matches. Christian Im added a solid 2–1 performance, while Jordan Ho, Davi Tonani, David Vahovskiy, and Braeden Murphy contributed key wins.
Burlington now stands at 12 wins, 10 losses, and 1 tie on the season and will return home on Wednesday to host Keefe Technical.
INDOOR TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT INVITATIONAL
The boys and girls track teams competed this past Saturday at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational.
Lyla Khun turned in a strong performance in the long jump, placing fourth overall with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. The girls’ 4×800 relay team also competed well, finishing 10th with a time of 10 minutes, 52 seconds.

Three Burlington athletes represented the boys’ team at the meet. Matthew Conte competed in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing 41st with a time of 8.57 seconds. In the long jump, Ryan Brooks placed 11th with a jump of 21 feet, 4 inches, while Shane Sheehan finished 22nd at 20 feet, 9 inches.
Both of the team will be back in action next Monday, February 2nd, when they compete in the Middlesex League Championship Meet.
200 MEDLEY RELAY TEAM MAKE NEW SCHOOL RECORD
Boys Swimming defeated the Stoneham-Melrose 91-76 last Tuesday. There were multiple first place finishes including: Shay Woodbury in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 56.10, Branden Ruiz in the 50 freestyle at 25.00 and Tom Cullen in the 100 breaststroke at 1:21.
Burlington lost 53–40 on the road to Arlington last Thursday, but the meet featured a major highlight for the Red Devils.
The Burlington 200 Medley Relay team set a new school record, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 51 seconds. The performance marks the fastest time ever recorded by a Burlington relay team in the event. Congratulations to the relay team on an outstanding accomplishment.
Burlington is now 2 and 4 and will finish the regular season against Winchester on Tuesday afternoon.
GIRLS GYMNASTICS LOSE CLOSE MEET ON THE ROAD
The Girls Gymnastics team lost by a close score of 138-136 at Wilmington last Thursday.
Top performers were Hana Ly on Vault at 9.1, Yuvethi Kannan and Hana Ly both had an 8.7 on Bars, Ly scored a 9.3 on the Balance Beam and the Floor Exercise.
Burlington is now 3 and 2 and will host 1 and 2 Winchester on Thursday night.
