Red Devil Spring Roundup: Senior Grace Hanafin Breaks Long Jump School Record, Softball Undefeated Streak Ends

SOFTBALL’S HOT STREAK ENDS
The softball team’s (11-2 overall) undefeated streak came to an end against Westford Academy on May 4, as they team lost in extra innings, 1-2. Burlington was shutout against Central Catholic on May 8, 0-3 at Marvin Field. The Devils will host the Watertown Red Raiders on May 9.

GIRLS/BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK DOMINATE STONEHAM
The girls (3-1 overall) and boys (4-0 overall) competed against Stoneham High School on May 3 at Varsity Field. The Lady Devils won 75-55 and the boys won 93-42. Both had great performances again over Wakefield Memorial on April 24. The Lady Devils won 78-58 and the boys won 97-39. Senior Grace Hanafin added another school record in the long jump at 19′ 3″. INDIVIDUAL MEETS FOR RED DEVILS OVER THE WEEKEND
Selected athletes from the Red Devils track team competed in the Jim Hoar MSTCA Freshmen-Sophomore Invitational meet at Weymouth High School on May 6 including: freshmen Ryan Brooks, Justin Gray and Chris O’ Divin; and sophomores Joshua Parkin, Nicholas Abbott, Rohan Dutta, Eshaan Kansangra, Krish Almeida, Arav Thikekar and William Preston. Seniors Elijah Wolinski, Anthony Abbott, Ryan Moradei, Eric Sekyaya and Connor Herrera competed at the Weston Twilight Meet over the weekend as well. Wolinski came in third in the 400m hurdles at 56.22. In the 1600-meter sprint, with the relay team of Abbott, Moradei, Sekyaya and Wolinski, the Red Devils finished in second with a time of 3:38.00. Herrera came in 49 place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.17.

Lastly, senior Rithikh Prakash competed in the Bay State Running Elite Scholarship 1 Mile race at Marshfield High School on May 5. Prakash finished 13 with a time of 4:25.02.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS WAKEFIELD MEMORIAL AND SOMERVILLE
Boys volleyball (6-4 overall) had huge wins over Wakefield Memorial and Somerville at the Vanella Gym. Against Wakefield Memorial, Burlington defeated their opponent in a 3-0 set win.  Somerville was the next game on the schedule on May 5, where they got a 3-1 win. The Red Devils will travel to Winchester High School on May 9.

GIRLS LACROSSE CAME AWAY WITH BACK TO BACK WINS
Girls lacrosse (6-3 overall) were at the Marshall Simonds Middle School Brush Field on May 3 for a home game against Arlington High School. The Lady Devils offense scored 20 points in the 20-8 victory. Burlington defeated Belmont at Harris Field on May 5, 11-8. Burlingtons game against Boston Latin on May 8 was postponed. The ladies will return to Varsity Field again on May 10 for a matchup against Woburn Memorial.

BOYS LACROSSE WIN BY FIVE AGAINST ARLINGTON
Boys lacrosse (9-3 overall) was at Peirce Turf at Arlington High School on the afternoon of May 3. The Devils won 9-4 against the Arlington Spy Ponders. Burlington returned home on May 5 at Varsity Field for a matchup against Belmont where they got a shutout win of 13-1.  Melrose visited the Marshall Simonds Middle School Brush Field on May 8 where the Devils came away victorious 15-4. The Red Devils will travel to Woburn Memorial High School for a matchup with the Tanners on May 10.

BASEBALL UP RECORD AFTER TWO WINS LEAGUE WINS
Boys baseball (7-5 overall) was down 4-0 in the game against Woburn Memorial on May 5. The Red Devils found a way to defeat the Tanners after a huge momentum shift in the sixth inning, when they scored 4 runs, tying the game 4-4. Burlington rallied back in the 8 innings to score 3 runs, as they defeated Woburn, 7-6.  The Devils defeated the Stoneham Spartans, 4-1, on May 7. Next up, will be the Victory Field Baseball Diamond in Watertown on May 9.

GIRLS TENNIS RECORD EVENS AFTER LOSS TO BELMONT
Girls tennis (6-5 overall) were unable to win against Belmont on May 5 at Harris Field, 0-5. The ladies faced the Stoneham Spartans at Rahanis Park on 8 where they came away with a 3-2 win. Winners in the meet were Jules Piscatelli and Alessia Pedruzzi, Olivia Dubrava and Phoenix Mahoney. Burlington will host Watertown High School on May 10 at Rahanis.

BOYS TENNIS WIN TWO GAMES AT HOME
Boys tennis (8-3 overall) had two games at home last week with Central Catholic on May 3 and Belmont on May 5. The Red Devils defeated Central in a one-sided win of 4-1. Against Belmont, the team won a close game of 3-2. Burlington was at Rahanis again on May 8 with the Stoneham Spartans where they had a 5-0 victory. The team will be on the road at the Victory Field Tennis Courts at Watertown High School on May 10.

THRILLER FOR UNIFIED BASAKETBALL
Burlington Unified Basketball  had a home game against Reading Memorial on May 3. The Red Devils won the game with a very close score of 60-59 over the Rockets. They will be at Winchester High School on May 10.
