GIRLS/BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK COMPETE AT MIAA D4 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The girls and boys track teams competed at the MIAA Division 4 Championship on May 26 and 28. Burlington girls tied in third place with Holliston with 58 points. A couple of record breakers from the girls team over the weekend were Cora Laverty, who broke her own school record in the Pentathlon, previously held at 2575 and now with a new score of 2743. Laverty was also the D4 champion in the 100m hurdles at 15.64. Senior Grace Hanafin was the D4 champion in the long jump at 18 feet and 9.50 inches. Hanafin came in second place at the 100m and reset her school record at 12.23. As for the boys, they were named the D4 Champions after coming in first place with 100.33 points. A couple of events to highlight include the 1-and 2-mile as senior Rithikh Prakash finished them both in 1st place (4.20.57 for the 1-mile) and 9:24.38 for the 2-mile. SOFTBALL LOSE LAST TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES
The (16-4 overall) softball team finished up the regular season with games against the Woburn Tanners and Central Catholic Cougars. On May 23, the Devils scored one run by sophomore Madison King in the 2-1 loss to the Winn Street rival. Burlington was shut out by Central Catholic 3-0 on May 27. The ladies now wait for the playoff seeding in the coming days.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL WINS IN SOMERVILLE AND GREATER LOWELL TECH ON SENIOR NIGHT
Boys volleyball (13-7 overall) closed out the regular season with wins over Somerville, 3-1, on May 24 and a 3-2 win over G.L.T. on May 27. The Red Devils are seeded at 27 in the D2 MIAA Playoff tournament and will compete against the 6 seeded (16-4) at O’Bryant on June 1 at 3:30pm.
GIRLS LACROSSE NAMED MIDDLESEX LEAGUE FREEDOM DIVISION CHAMPS
Girls lacrosse (13-5 overall) had three games left on the docket for the season including Masconomet, Methuen and Melrose. The team lost to Masconomet by one point in the 11-10 loss. Goals in the game were made by juniors Charlize Collins (6), Elisabeth Delorey (1), Jill Gillis (1), Ilex Fowler (1) and sophomore Lexi MacKinnon (1). In a game that ended in overtime, the ladies prevailed 12-11 against Methuen. Goal scorers in the game were Collins (4), Delorey (4), sophomore CJ Tremblay (2), Gillis (1) and Fowler (1). Burlington had a 10-7 win over Melrose to close out the regular season and named the Middlesex League Freedom Division Champions for the first year in a row. Goals in the game came from Tremblay (3), Gillis (3), Delorey (2), Collins (1) and Fowler (1). Burlington now waits for the tournament bracket from the MIAA.
BOYS LACROSSE ALSO NAMED LEAGUE DIVSION CHAMPS
Boys lacrosse (13-5 overall) finished out the season with Westwood High and North Andover May 23 and May 25. In Westwood the team lost by a point, 11-10 and won by three, 15-12, over North Andover on May 25 at Varsity Field. This would be the first time in school history that the girls and boys lacrosse teams were named division champs in the same season. As of now, the team is waiting for the playoff seeding in the MIAA tournament.
BASEBALL LOSES TO LYNNFIELD AND READING MEMORIAL IN BRENDAN GRANT TOURNEY
Boys baseball (10-10 overall) competed at Belmont High School for the Brendan Grant Tournament on May 26 and 27. In the first round, the Devils competed against the Lynnfield Pioneers, where they lost by 4 in the 9-5 loss. In second round of the tournament, Burlington clashed with the Reading Rockets and lost by a point, 5-4.
GIRLS TENNIS NAMED MIDDLESEX FREEDOM DIVISION CHAMPIONS
Girls tennis (11-6 overall) competed at the Crystal Street Tennis Courts in Melrose on May 24, where they got the 4-1 victory and were named the Middlesex League Freedom Division Champs. Winners in the match were junior Allie Boyle, sophomore Mason Alongi, junior Jules Piscatelli/sophomore Alessia Pedruzzi and sophomores Olivia Dubrava/Phoenix Mahoney. Burlington is ranked the 17 seed in the MIAA Division 2 playoffs and will compete in the “Round of 32” against the 16 seeded (9-7) Reading Memorial on May 31 at 4 p.m. at RMHS.
BOYS TENNIS HOSTING NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH IN D2 PLAYOFFS
Boys tennis (14-4 overall) are ranked number 7 in the Division 2 MIAA Playoffs and will host the 26 seed North Attleborough (9-9) at Rahanis Park in the “Round of 32.” The date and time is TBA.
