Red Devil Spring Roundup: Track teams Crowned Middlesex Freedom Champs, Softball Back in Win Column

GIRLS/BOYS OUTDOOR TRACK CROWNED MIDDLESEX FREEDOM CHAMPS
The girls (4-1 overall) and boys (5-0 overall) competed against Wilmington High School on May 9 at Varsity Field. The Lady Devils won 74-62 and the boys won 106-31. Both teams were crowned the 2023 Middlesex League Freedom Division Champions! This was the first time the girls held the indoor and outdoor freedom titles since the 2014/2015 season. MSTCA STATE COACHES INVITATIONAL:
Selected athletes from the girls track team competed at the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association’s State Coaches Invitational in Norton on May 13. Freshmen Kaya Cummings and juniors Cora Laverty and Hope Hanafin attended the invitational. In the 100m, Laverty came in 6th with a time of 16.46 and Cummings placed 29th with a time of 14.07, Hanafin finished with a time of 1:01.34 in the 400m and placed 8th.

SOFTBALL SHUTOUT OPPONENTS IN BACK TO BACK GAMES
The softball team’s (14-2 overall) got back in the win column after getting two big shutout wins last week over Watertown and Melrose at Marvin Field. Against Watertown, the ladies had a 5-0 victory on May 9. Burlington went around the diamond 9 times in the 9-0 win over Melrose on May 11. The Lady Devils competed at home against Westford Academy on May 15 where they got the win of 3-1. Burlington will be at Blatz Field in Wakefield on May 16.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL DEFEAT ESSEX TECH AFTER TWO LOSSES LAST WEEK
Boys volleyball (8-6 overall) lost back to back games last week, first they had a shutout of 0-3 in Winchester of May 9 and then a 1-3 set loss in Arlington on May 11. The Red Devils were back in the win column on May 13 at Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School where they got the close win of 3-2 in the sets. Burlington hosted Woburn Memorial on May 15 at the Vanella Gym where they won 3-2 in the sets. They host Lexington High School on May 17 at BHS.

GIRLS LACROSSE COMPETE WITH WINN ST. RIVAL
Girls lacrosse (7-4 overall) were at the Burlington High School Varsity Field on May 10 for a home game against their rival the Woburn Tanners. The Burlington offense scored 15 goals on offense, while their defense allowed 7 goals to the Tanners. Burlington took home the victory of 15-7 that evening. The ladies will be back at the Marshall Simonds Middle School Brush Field on May 15 against Reading Memorial where they lost 16-4. Burlington will have another game at MSMS on May 17 against Wakefield.

BOYS LACROSSE WIN BY FIVE AGAINST ARLINGTON
Boys lacrosse (10-3 overall) were at Peirce Turf at Arlington High School on the afternoon of May 3. The Devils won 9-4 against the Arlington Spy Ponders. Burlington returned home on May 5 at Varsity Field for a matchup against Belmont, where they got a shutout win of 13-1.  Melrose visited the Marshall Simonds Middle School Brush Field on May 8, where the Devils came away victorious 15-4. The Red Devils traveled to Woburn Memorial High School for a matchup with the Tanners on May 10 where they had a big win of 19-8. Burlington will be at Landrigan Field at Wakefield Memorial High School on May 17.

BASEBALL LOSES TWO GAMES BACK TO BACK
Boys baseball (7-7 overall) were at the Victory Field Baseball Diamond in Watertown on May 9, where they lost 2-3. Burlington was on the road again at Morelli Field in Melrose on May 11 where they team lost by two, 3-5. Wakefield Memorial will visit the Francis Wyman Baseball Field on May 16.

GIRLS TENNIS GET ONE SIDED WIN AGAINST WATETOWN
Girls tennis (7-5 overall) had a big win over Watertown High School on May 10, 4-1. Melrose High School was the next opponent on May 11, but that meet was postponed to a later date. The Dobbins Tennis Courts will be the next destination when the team travels to in Wakefield on May 16.

BOYS TENNIS WIN BIG OVER WATERTOWN AND MELROSE
Boys tennis (10-4 overall) had two games last week, one in Watertown on May 10 and the other at home against Melrose on May 11. In both meets, the boys got  5-0 victories. Burlington traveled to the Wellington Tennis Courts in Arlington on May 15 where they lost 3-2 in the matches. The Red Devils are back at Rahanis Park for a meet against Wakefield Memorial on May 16.

UNIFIED BASKETBALL TRAVELED TO WINCHESTER
Burlington Unified Basketball team was at Winchester High School on May 10, where they had a one-sided win of 63-45. The Red Devils are back at home at the Vanella Gym on May 18 to compete against Watertown High School.
