Red Devil Spring Sports: Boys Tennis Wins Over Walpole, Lacrosse Teams Advance to Round of 16

The MIAA Playoffs continue for the Red Devil Athletes. Let’s take a look at how our teams are doing: 

BOYS TENNIS WIN IN ROUND OF 32 AND 16
Burlington had a 4-1 victory in the Round of 32 of the playoffs against North Attleborough on May 28.  They remained at home for the Round of 16 against 11th seeded Walpole on June 3 and won the match in a 5-0 shutout. The Round of 8 is next on June 5 against third-seed Duxbury at Steele Athletic Complex. 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS ACADEMY OF PACIFIC RIM
The Red Devil Volleyball team advanced to the Round of 32 of the division 2 MIAA Playoff Tournament after a 3-0 shutout against the Pacific Rim team on May 31. Burlington will face 12th-seed Marlborough. who finished the regular season at 13-5. The game will be on June 4 at 5 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE ADVANCE TO ROUND OF 16
The girls lacrosse team defeated Canton High School 16-6 in the Round of 32 of the D2 MIAA Playoff Tournament on May 31. Goals in the Canton victory were scored by Charlize Collins (7), Elisabeth Delorey (4), Emma Steiner (2), Ava Robitaille (1), Ilex Fowler (1) and girls laxKeira Storlazzi (1). Burlington will be competing against  eighth-seeded Duxbury in the “Round of 16” of the playoffs. Date TBA. 

Head coach Kat Boyle was proud of how the girls fought against Canton. “We knew it was going to be a fight going on, we played them two years ago and it was the same type of situation,” she said. “We just went out there, worked hard, played as a team and came up big.” 

 

BOYS LACROSSE HOSTED MARTHA’S VINEYARD REGIONAL IN ROUND OF 32
The boys’ team defeated Martha’s Vineyard Regional with ease, 17-5, in the Round of 32 of the D3 MIAA Playoff Tournament on May 31. Now the team faces Dracut High School in the Round of 16 at Varsity Field on June 4 at 5:30 p.m. 

“One of the things that Dracut does really well is they slow the game down and have really good offensive possession,” Head Coach Brenden Maney said. “They make it really difficult to score on and they have a really good goalie.” 

GIRLS SOFTBALL SEASON ENDS
The Red Devils softball team lost 12-0 to Somerset Berkley Regional in the MIAA Round of 32 on June 1. Four seniors have departed from the team including Morgan Ryan, Charlotte Wiley, Shea McDonald and Abby Wojtaszek. 

BOYS BASEBALL TOPS SCITUATE IN PRELIMINARY ROUND, LOSES IN ROUND OF 32
The baseball team defeated Scituate 4-2 in the Preliminary Round of the D2 MIAA Playoffs on June 1. Burlingtons’ season came to an end after a 12-1 loss against second-seeded Plymouth South in the Round of 32 of the playoffs, on June 3. Two seniors have departed from the team including Peyton Matta and Nolan Lopes. 

BOYS TRACK COMPETE IN MIAA MEET OF CHAMPIONS
Boys track competed in the MIAA Meet of Champions at Fitchburg State from May 30 through June 1. 

Ryan Brooks was a top finisher in the Pentathlon, while Chris Williams and Julian Sacca both competed as top 24 throwers in Shot Put. For a full list of results click here.

Julian Sacca earned a Middlessex League All Conference honor at the ML-12 Championship, while Ryan Brooks earned honors for javelin and shot put. Brooks was also named the MVP of the Middlesex League Freedom. Congratulations! 

Thirteen athletes were named ML-Freedom All Stars: Sean Cox in 100m, Dylan Giles in 400m and 4×4, Colin Irwin in 800m and 4×4, Krish Almeida in 1 mile, Cam Mattson in the 110H, Alex Murray in the 400H, Eshaan Kansagra in the 4×4, Rohan Dutta in the 4×4, Leon Sekandi in the High Jump, Shane Sheehan in the Long Jump, Chris Williams in Shot Put, Kevin Conte in the Javelin and Ethan Tedesco in the Discus.
