The Burlington High School winter sports season is into its second week, here’s a recap of recent games and we’ll have a full run down of the holiday meets and games when BNEWS Sports returns in the new year.
BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM STAYS UNDEFEATED
The boys basketball team remains undefeated at 3-0 after a big 87-63 win over Lexington and a 52-40 victory against Watertown. BHS Boys basketball will be competing in the Tony Romano Holiday Tournament on December 23 and 27 in Tewksbury.
GIRLS BASKETBALL COME UP SHORT
First year head coach Neil Rebelo suffered his first loss of the season, a close 23-26 loss against Watertown, bringing their record to 2-1. They will have a small break before they return for a non-league game against Ipswich Monday, December 30.
BOYS SWIMS’ CARL MARTIN QUALIFIED FOR STATE
Red Devil Swimming continues to search for their first win of the season after losing three meets in a row to Belmont, Arlington and Reading.
Shay Woodbury has already clinched a spot in Februarys’ Sectionals and State Championship Meet. Carl Martin recently qualified for States as well and now holding the BHS swim record in the 100 Breaststroke at 1:04.74. The Devils will return to action in the new year on January 10 at Winchester.
HOCKEY TEAMS MIXED RESULTS AGAINST ARLINGTON
The varsity hockey teams played some games before the holiday break began. Both teams had big victories against the Lexington Minutemen with the girls winning 5-2 and the boys, 5-0. You can watch these games in their entirety here.
This past weekend varisty hockey visited Arlington with mixed results. The girls had a big 4-1 win thanks to goals from Emma Steiner (1), Sofia Cleary (1) and CJ Tremblay (2). James Gordon scored the lone goal in the 2-1 loss for the boys.
The current records for the teams are 2-1 and 1-2 for the girls and boys, respectively. Lady Devils will face Malden Catholic on December 23, before returning to action on January 4.
The boys host one game during the holiday break against Westford Academy on Saturday, December 28, before facing Stoneham in the new year.
DEVILS WRESTLING WIN BIG IN MALDEN
Red Devils Wrestling have improved their record to 1-3 after a huge 63-18 win against Malden Catholic last week. Burlington earned 9 pins on the night and only lost one contested match. Freshman Lukas Abreu, Connor McElroy and Ahmed Shoaib and Sophomore Christian Imall earned their first varsity wins. Burlington will be competing in the Lowell Holiday Tournament this Friday, December 27 and Saturday, December 28.
TRACK TEAMS FALL IN OPENER
Both the girls and boys indoor track teams began the new season with their Middlesex League Rival, Melrose. Both teams lost the meet, 62-37 for the girls and 57-42 for the boys. You can check out the full results here.
William Morrison and William Preston competed in the Weight Throw event at the MSTCA Speed Classic this past weekend. Morrison finished fifth at 38 feet and 6 inches and Preston in seventh at 36 feet and 10 inches.
