Red Devil Winter Sports: Burlington Teams Up and Down in the New Year

DEVILS WRESTLING HAS THREE MATCHES THIS PAST WEEK
The Burlington Wrestling team (6-6 overall) won big over the Wilmington Wildcats, 60-24 on Jan. 4. Junior Ian Larson won his first varsity match over Wilmington. Click here for the full results. The team then hosted a tri-meet against Lynnfield/North Reading, Winchester and Hanover, finishing 1-2. Burlington won 42-33 over Lynnfield/North Reading with pins by Ryan McGillivray and Jaden Alford. The Red Devils had a tough time over Winchester in a 60-24 loss. Marcus Tucci, Ahmad Kiswani and Jonathan Panagou had three pins. In the last match of the day the Devils were unable to bounce back from the previous loss as they fell to Hanover 60-12. Kiswani was the only pin in that match.

Burlington will host Melrose High School in a Wednesday evening contest of Jan. 11.

GIRLS HOCKEY LOSE ONE AT HOME AND ONE ON THE ROAD
Burlington (5-3 overall) had a chance to tie up the game against Arlington Catholic but fell through, 3-2, at home. The team had the same result against the combined Stoneham/Wilmington team over the weekend, 3-2.

The girls will have a short time to prepare for the home game against Arlington High School on Jan. 9.

BOYS HOCKEY GET FIRST WIN OVER WILMINGTON
Burlington (1-1-4 overall) helped first year coach Bobby Conceison, Jr. get his first win as they skated past the Wildcats, 4-3. Goals for the Red Devils came from seniors Jonathan Jay, Jackson Powers, junior Charlie Andriolo and sophomore Nolan Jennings. Burlington had one goal scored by sophomore Seumas McMakin in the 4-1 loss in Stoneham on the weekend.

Burlington will have another road game against Watertown on Jan. 11.

GIRLS B-BALL SCORE IN LAST SECONDS
Burlington (2-5 overall) defeated Watertown with :08 seconds left on the clock in the 4th period with a 2 pointer scored by sophomore Savanna Scali, 60-58. Leading offensively was Scali (19 points), senior Alyvia Pena (14 points) and freshmen Sophia Marshall (12 points).

Burlington is at home again against Arlington High School on Jan. 10.

BOYS B-BALL GET BY WATERTOWN
Red Devils (7-1 overall) won with a 12 point differential, 60-48 over the Watertown Red Raiders on Jan. 6. Scoring leaders from the game were junior Cedric Rodriguez (21 points), senior Eric Sekyaya (13 points) and junior Jaden Brehm (10 points).

On Jan. 10 the boys will be on the road against Arlington High School.

TRACK TEAMS FACE MIDDLESEX RIVAL WAKEFIELD MEMORIAL
The undefeated streak ended for the girls team (3-1 overall)  as they fell to Wakefield, 52-48. Boys remain undefeated (4-0 overall) with a 58-42 win.

Both teams were invited to the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Auerbach freshmen/sophomore championship on Jan. 8. For the girls, sophomore Althea Wolinkski placed 8th in the 600 meter with a personal record of 1:45.50. Ashleigh DeMartinis, also a sophomore placed 8th in the 2 mile run with a finished time of 13:32.85. Freshmen Lucy Clement had a personal record of 47.87 in the 300 meter.  You can check out the full results here

As for the boys, Chris Williams (shot put) and Krish Almeida (2 mile) both finished 3rd. For the full list of the results click here

Another meet at the Track at New Balance will take place for the two on Jan. 26 against Wilmington.

BOYS SWIMMING LOSE SECOND MATCH OF THE SEASON
The Red Devils (1-2 overall) have another loss in the column after a 91-71 defeat over Belmont on Jan. 4. Watertown is next on the schedule with the Devils hosted them on Jan.10.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS STARTED SEASON IN READING
Lady Devils (0-1 overall) fall to Reading, 144.95-139.55 in the season opener on Jan. 4. The ladies will be on the road again at Woburn High School to face Winchester on Jan. 10.

BOYS GYMNASTICS WINS SEASON OPENER AGAINST BRAINTREE, LOWELL AND NEWTON
Red Devil Gymnastics (1-0 overall) had a meet in the south shore on Jan. 6. against Braintree, Lowell and Newton. Burlington came in first place with 122.9 points, Braintree (105.9), Newton (104) and Lowell (51.1). 

The Red Devils will have a rematch against these teams at home on Jan. 12.
