Rowan Ear Piercing Studio is currently making plans for a new location in the Burlington Mall. Rowan has over 65 locations, including ones at Legacy Place in Dedham, and Assembly Row in Somerville. What makes Rowan unique is all piercings are performed by licensed nurses.
Dani Axelord, Vice President of Operations for Rowan Inc. appeared before the Board of Health during the February 11 meeting for a variance request.
The reason for the variance being that the Board of Health’s Rules and Regulations for Body Art Establishments and Practitioners require practitioners to have two years of experience. Interestingly when it comes to ear piercing, the ear lobe is exempt from the board’s regulations, but other parts of the year are not. The variance would exempt Rowan’s nurses from the requirement of two-years experience, and allow them to pierce parts of the ear other than the lobe.
The variance was approved 3-0-0 (Members Maribeth Welch and Marwa El-Sabbahy were not present). Rowan hires both Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN). A opening date for the Burlington Mall location is not known at this time.
