The Burlington Girls Softball team is raising funds for a scholarship in honor of former Head Coach Kristen Farrell.
Gloria Wojtaszek, Director of Family & Community Engagement for Burlington Public Schools, helped to make the scholarship a reality.
“My two daughters were fortunate to be coached by Kristen,” said Wojtaszek. “She was also a scholar athlete and her picture is in the [Burlington High School] Lower library. Division I Player, International Player, coach, mentor, and current teacher at Memorial Elementary. She’s one of a kind!”
Farrell announced her retirement from coaching last summer after fifteen seasons. She led the team to their first state championship in 2023.
“It was such a huge honor to have this scholarship created in my name.” said Farrell, “It’s a way to keep on giving back to the program even though I won’t be there coaching.”
Farrell continued, “Coaching Burlington High softball has been a great honor, and I’ll forever be grateful that I was given this opportunity. I always felt so proud to be representing my hometown. I was lucky enough to coach many amazing student athletes, and to do so alongside my dad was very special. There are many coaching moments that I’ll never forget. Helping to bring the first ever softball State Title home to Burlington is definitely one of them.”
The scholarship will be available to all senior softball players. It has been set up through the Burlington Community Scholarship Foundation (BSCF), a non-profit organization that works to provide secondary-education opportunities for all residents of Burlington. Those looking to donate can do so here.
There will also be a Kristen Farrell Memorial Softball Game held over Memorial Day weekend, which will help to raise funds.
