Select Board Approves Timeline for High School Building Project

The Select Board approved the proposed timeline for the High School Building Project at their August 11 meeting.

Representatives from the Burlington High School Building Committee presented their timeline to include placing a warrant article on the September Town Meeting and a November 15 special election for a debt exclusion ballot vote. Town Meeting will vote to approve the funding of the project subject to a debt exclusion.

Board member Nick Priest, who is in favor of a new high school, expressed concern about the speed of the timeline including the logistics and cost of holding a special election in November.

“I’m probably the only voice that believes that this does not need to happen on this timeline,” stated Priest. “I don’t understand why that can’t happen in January and give us more of a window to educate the public, make everyone aware of the project.”

Doug Davison, Ways and Means rep to the High School Building Committee acknowledged the validity of the cost concerns however noted a delay could cost the project another building season and that might mean missing out on current cost savings due to a down economy.

Board member Sarah Cawley pointed out that a standalone election for the High School Building Project would allow voters to focus on the proposed project.

“It calls more attention to the issue by having it on the ballot by itself”, said Cawley.

Following discussion the Select Board voted 4-1 in favor of the High School Building Committee’s timeline only. They will have an opportunity to vote on the warrant article in September ahead of Town Meeting.
