Select Board Recognizes 60th Ugandan Independence Day

October 9th is commonly recognized as Ugandan Independence Day, and this year marks the nation’s sixty years of independence, having first gained it in 1962. Known as “The Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is home to over 45 million people, and parades and performances are held nationwide to celebrate its independence.

More than 50,000 Ugandans live and work here in New England, making it the largest Ugandan population in the Northern Hemisphere. Last weekend a special breakfast for local businesses was held at the Burlington Marriott to celebrate Ugandan Independence Day. Select Board Chair Nicholas Priest was in attendance, where he presented a Proclamation on behalf of the Select Board, commemorating the nation’s 60th Independence Day.

Chairman Priest told BNEWS, “It was a great opportunity to connect with the Ugandan community of New England and Burlington, and not only celebrate their 60th year of independence, but to extend open arms of collaboration within the community moving forward. “
