Town Election Now Competitive for Shawsheen Tech School Committee, Town Meeting

Burlington’s town election is seeing more competitive races than it has in most recent years.

Most recently the race for Shawsheen Tech School Committee has become competitive. At this point four candidates have pulled papers for the one open seat. They are Ronald Fusco, Jr., Doug Hastings, Michael Kelly and Christine Kim.

In the race for the two open seats on the Board of Selectmen there are three candidates. Incumbents Joe Morandi and Mike Runyan have both pulled papers. Challenger and Town Meeting member Shari Ellis has also taken out papers and announced her candidacy. Ruynan is looking for a fourth term and Morandi is seeking a third term.

Town Clerk Amy Warfield, who is finishing up her second five year term, also has a challenger. Joseph Welch has taken out papers to run against her in April.

School Committee member Martha Simon, who has taken out papers for a third term, is being challenged by newcomer Wajid Qureshi.

Other newcomers include Andrea Sheehan for Board of Health and former selectman Chris Hartling for the Housing Authority. So far they are not in competitive races because as of this writing incumbents Elizabeth Walendziewicz (Board of Health) and Bernice Ferguson (Housing) have not yet pulled papers.

There are also competitive races in Town Meeting Precincts 1 and 3. Click Here to see a full list of candidates.

Nomination papers can be received from the Town Clerk’s office by anyone who is a resident and a registered voter. The deadline to return papers with the required signatures of other registered voters is Friday, February 19. Click here to watch a segment on how to run for office in Burlington.
