Town Meeting Approves Transferring Funds for New Sidewalk Project

Town Meeting voted overwhelmingly to support a warrant article that would move funds from a previously approved project to the first phase of another that is geared at making walking in town safer.

The article called for the reallocation of $120,000 that was previously approved by Town Meeting in 2018 for sidewalk work on Terrace Hall Avenue to sidewalk walk on Winter Street near the intersection of Peach Orchard Road and Pearl Street. The town did not give up on the Terrace Hall Ave. sidewalk project but instead received funds from the MassDOT Winter Street Program for that project.

Town Engineer Tom Hayes explained that this project would create new sidewalk on Winter Street that would connect with existing sidewalk on both Winter Street and Pearl Street. This, he said, would fill in gaps in the sidewalk between Burlington and the Woburn town line. When asked if this was a priority highlighted by the Sidewalk Committee he said he wasn’t sure it was on the list but making complete sidewalks is a priority.

A future part of the project at that intersection includes changes to the intersection at the end of Peach Orchard Road by bumping out the intersection to slow down cars making a right turn and adding crosswalks.
